The Hermit

Prompt: Chuck (aka The Prophet… Chuck!, aka Chuck Shurley, aka Carver Edlund)

Medium: Yarn! (All of Chuck is yarn, but for his eyes, which are black beads). Sculpey for his plunger, paper for the backdrop, his script, and the collage-esque floor.

Artist’s notes:

So yeah, hey, the Hermit. This was a lot of fun to do. :)

Admittedly I made Chuck last year during season 4 (dressed as he was when we first met him in “The Monster at the End of this Book.” The Hermit card is generally shown as a figure in an empty landscape, holding a staff and a lantern.

I decided that Chuck’s house was his landscape, so I wanted to capture the feeling of his house (if not literally) with the strewn papers. (Some of them are title pages like the one we saw in “Lucifer Rising.” Some are transcribed bits of Chuck’s prose from “Monster…” and some are just Lorum Ipsems.)

For his staff, I went with humor and used the toilet plunger from “Sympathy for the Devil”. The staff is supposed to be the Hermit’s tool, and a symbol of his journey and strength… Well, he did hit Sam with it. But honestly, I saw the alcohol bottles flung about as his staff, as well, in a metaphorical sense.

Instead of a lantern, I have him holding a script (in this case “Lucifer Rising”, not that its legible) as a symbol of knowledge. (The star in the lantern is supposed to be the “light of God” and I felt that Chuck’s “word of God” would work here.)
