The Tower

Prompt: The Nursery Fire

Artist’s notes:

The nursery fires have always been, to me, one of the most interesting and of course important events in Supernatural mythology. So when I saw this prompt was still available, I jumped at the chance to make the card. I don’t know much about tarot, so I did some research on the significance and design of the card, googling many different interpretations of it.

I knew from the beginning I wanted the tower to be a hybrid of the traditional tower and a house, complete with a chimney and shutters by the windows. Instead of the 3 windows on the original card, I wanted two of the windows to be Azazel’s eyes, burning the same yellow as the fire in the nursery and the lightning bolt striking the tower.

Mary and Sam are the “falling” figures, as they are the ones whose lives are directly affected by Azazel that night. In my mind, although I didn’t make them visible, John and Dean are trapped in the tower, the ones whose lives are indirectly affected because of Azazel’s power over their loved ones.
