As Aries, the Ram, the Emperor naturally follows the pregnant Empress. Aries is the infant, the first sign of the Zodiac. Like an infant, he is filled with enthusiasm, energy, aggression. He is direct, guileless and all too often irresistible. Unfortunately, like a baby he can also be a tyrant and be impatient, demanding, controlling. In the best of circumstances, he signifies the leader that everyone wants to follow, sitting on a throne that indicates the solid foundation of an Empire he created, loves and rules with intelligence and enthusiasm. But that throne can also be a trap, a responsibility that has the Emperor feeling restless, bored and discontent.
Basic card symbols: Throne, ram’s heads, orb and sceptre. Sometimes an eagle.
Artist’s notes:
This card is for mizzykitty, the resident John fanatic in my life. I wanted to show John both as a father, but also as a hunter, and how that obsession has come in the way of his relationship with his sons. The usual orb, sceptre and throne in the Emperor card were replaced with the unused baseball on the floor, the rifle and the crappy motel chair. The card usually also features ram’s heads as part of the throne design, so I used a ram’s head on the motel sign. I like the think that the motel behind the Impala is the one that Sam and Ruby are staying in in my Hanged Man card. Oh, and the three birds in the sky are meant to represent the freedom the family could have if John gave up his obsession :-)
